Train vs Plane

Rethink how you travel this summer

Whether you’re travelling cross country for work, holidays or to visit family and friends, you’ll be thinking about the best way to get there this summer.
New independent research challenges common misconceptions about taking the train or plane, showing that on the train you can make better use of your time, get there for less, cut your carbon impact, and stay flexible when plans change.

Make more of
your time

Taking the train gives you control over your journey. Your travel time is yours to use. New research shows taking the train means gaining an average of three hours more usable time compared to flying.

When you factor in getting to the airport, check in, security and boarding, an estimated 93% of a rail journey is productive time compared to just 33% of a domestic flight.

So, whether you spend it getting ahead on work, catching up with friends or simply relaxing and watching the world go by, you can make more of your journey by taking the train.

For regular travellers, those hours add up. With a once-weekly journey between Edinburgh and London, you could gain the equivalent of a full working day each month.

This research highlights the benefits rail can offer passengers, from lower costs and lower carbon emissions to more time that can be spent relaxing or staying productive. With frequent services connecting cities across Britain, rail offers a convenient, flexible and attractive way to travel.

Get there sooner by train

People assume taking the train takes around an hour longer than flying, but you could be missing out on quicker trips on some of the UK's most popular routes.

The data shows that travelling between London and Newcastle can be an hour faster on average by train. Between London and Manchester, passengers can save over an hour and a half (99 minutes). This takes into account the time it takes to travel from airports outside of the city centre, and the longer time you need to allow between arriving at the airport and take-off, compared to arriving for a train.

There's something special about visiting the tourism treasures of our nations and regions by train. Whether it's a cultural city break, a set jetting stay or a trip to one of our picturesque coastal or rural destinations, travelling by rail offers an easy, efficient and environmentally friendly way to explore more and enjoy spectacular scenery along the way.

Get there for less

You could be missing out on more affordable travel within the UK.

Many people assume that travelling by train is more expensive than flying, but passengers save 71% on average when they take the train, or £147 per journey. That takes into account the additional costs of adding baggage to your ticket, transfers to and from the airport, and charges like seat selection fees when you fly.

Looking at fares alone, domestic flights cost 57% more on average than an equivalent train ticket.

Between London and Edinburgh, for example, a train ticket costs £64 on average, compared to £140 when flying.

Travel flexibly

With frequent services throughout the day, rail can make it easier to plan around your schedule, or to adapt when plans change.

Between London and Edinburgh, for example, there are 45 rail services every day and only 29 flights. That means more options if you need to travel earlier, stay later, change plans… there's no need to plan your trip around a limited flight schedule.

On key rail routes, services run up to every 20 minutes, giving you more choice over when you travel when you take the train.

Cut your carbon impact

Choosing to take the train instead of flying is one of the simplest ways to reduce the carbon impact of a long-distance journey.

Our independent research found that travelling by rail produces 85% less CO₂ per passenger than the equivalent domestic flight.

Across the routes studied, that means an average saving of 102 kgCO₂e per journey when passengers choose the train. That's the equivalent of boiling over 20,000 cups of water.

If you are looking to make more sustainable travel choices, switching from air to rail makes a real difference.

About the data

This data is sourced from a new report produced by Steer. The report, ‘Clearing the Air’, was commissioned by Rail Delivery Group and can be found here.

It covers seven domestic routes between:
