Customers reminded to check before they travel due to upcoming one day strikes and overtime ban across train companies in May

  • ASLEF will stage three, one-day strikes, across different train operating companies between 7 to 9 May, as well as an overtime ban across 16 train companies from Monday 6 to Saturday 11 May, which may lead to short-notice cancellations;   
  • Revised timetables for the strikes will be available on National Rail Enquiries and journey planners by 1 May;  
  • Customers are urged to check before they travel as there will be changes to services across large parts of the network, with some train operators not running any services on strike days;    
  • Customers who have to travel should expect disruption, plan ahead and check when their first and last train will depart.

Train tracks triumph - new findings show that trains are up to 80% cheaper than planes for domestic travel

  • Travelling by rail can be up to 80% cheaper on similar routes than flying, when accounting for the additional cost of baggage and airport transfers.  
  • Rail is up to 17 times greener when travelling for business across Britain compared to flying.  
  • Travelling by plane takes longer than by train door-to-door for four out of the six domestic travel routes we looked at.   
  • There are 50% more rail services available per day from London to Edinburgh compared to flights (39 rail services compared to 26 flights).
