The RDG has for several years been advocating for structural reform of the rail industry. Earlier in 2021, we welcomed the white paper as a transformational moment for the industry. We are actively supporting and engaging in the reform of the industry and are clear that there will be some changes as to where in the long term, some functions of the important work we do is carried out. This is a once in a generational moment for the industry and the roles listed below are opportunities which will play an important part in delivering for customers and against the Government’s long term vision for the sector. Year Placement Engineer- 12M FTC (to start September 2024

Salary scale: £20,048 per annum

What is the purpose of this job?

Our scheme is designed to develop the engineering leaders needed by the future railway.

During your placement year at RDG you will work within the Engineering Team helping to support the Rail Industry in producing a reliable and state-of-the-art service for passengers.

Working at RDG you will have the opportunity to interact and network with an array of leading professionals and decision makers within the rail industry.

What can I expect to do in this job? 

Your Year in Industry is all about your development. Your year will be extremely varied and will include several challenging deliverables. Throughout the year your core activities will be supplemented with a range of technical visits and training courses and activities designed to give you the strongest foundation to be a leader of the future within our 200-year-old industry.

Whilst working for RDG, you will be accountable for:

  • Finding solutions to meaningful problems
  • Managing and administering engineering and business projects
  • Conducting research on different topics affecting industry and presenting your findings to industry experts
  • Supporting the Engineering Team to facilitate cross-industry technical meetings

What experience, skills and knowledge do I need?

  • To be studying a degree accredited by the IET or the IMechE
  • To be self-motivated, personable and enthusiastic with a professional approach to business
  • To have good written and verbal communication skills as well as excellent organisational and time management skills.

This scheme is a great opportunity to experience the Rail Industry first-hand through a number of technical visits around the UK and an 8-week hands on placement at a Train Depot.

Partnership Settlement Assistant

Closing date: 20  March 2024

Salary: £25,000-£28,000 per annum

What is the purpose of this job?

This role is to provide support to our Partnerships Settlement Lead within the Settlement and Treasury Team.


What can I expect to do in this job?

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but things you can expect to be involved with include:

• Extracting information from our sales system (Salesforce) and producing reports re promotional codes redeemed in total and individual reports for the different Railcard partners.

• Receiving queries from our payment card provider (Global Payments) investigating and taking appropriate action.

• Maintain accurate records of cheque payments, notifying Railcard call centre team of any rejections and work closely with them to obtain timely resolutions.

• Receiving queries from customers (via Railcard partners) investigating and taking appropriate action.

• Actioning refund requests in relation to Railcards, where the method of payment was via promotional code.

• Creation of and maintaining correct levels of promotional codes for Railcard partners.

• Undertaking bank reconciliations, reconciling sales made via the Rail Staff Travel online retail system with funds received in the bank and sales reported to LENNON.

Who will my key contacts be?

• Your contacts will be varied and will include people within RDG and external suppliers.


What experience, skills and knowledge do I need?

• Naturally inquisitive, willing to try to work out the answers for yourself
• Hard working and reliable
• Precision and attention to detail
• Hands-on experience with MS Excel and MS Word
• Ability to handle sensitive information
• Knowledge of Salesforce and/or Global Payments would be an advantage (but we can train you)

Project Manager- Policing and Security 10m FTC

Closing date: 20 March 2024

Salary scale: £45,000-£55,000 per annum

What is the purpose of this job?

We believe that the art of project management is about the balance between driving delivery and being an inspiring leader who forges strong working relationships. As a Project Manager at RDG your role is to work across a range of teams and stakeholders to deliver multiple projects at a time using several different methodologies. This will involve employing both project management tools and techniques and excellent people skills. This role will be measured by the successful delivery of projects within our organisation, and where appropriate our member organisations too.

What can I expect to do in this job?

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but things you can expect to be involved with include:

  • Planning what work needs to be done, when and who’s going to do it;
  • Looking at the risks involved in a particular project and managing these risks;
  • Responsibility for the work being done to the right standard;
  • Motivating the team of people involved in the project;
  • Co-ordinating work done by different people;
  • Responsibility for the project running on time and to budget;
  • Dealing with changes to the project as and when necessary;
  • Driving the project to deliver the expected outcomes and benefits; and
  • Working to the RDG Project Delivery Framework and ensuring that other do too.

What experience, skills and knowledge do I need?

We are looking for someone with a proven track record on the management of programmes/projects qualified with relevant system such as Prince2 or MSProject and ideally someone who has rail industry experience.

Some of the sort of specific skills and knowledge we are looking for include:

  • Projects and programmes management and associated methodology
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written
  • Experience in producing high-quality change management tools and delivering these successfully
  • Ability to work with, and influence, appropriate stakeholders to ensure commitment and alignment
  • Dynamic, team player who is also a self-starter
  • Ability to manage a diverse and complex stakeholder group, over varying roles and functions
  • Great at articulating the value of change and associated plans and activities
  • Effective at partnering with others to plan, develop and deliver effective change interventions
  • Understand both the physiological and psychological impacts of change on wellbeing and resilience, and techniques to respond
