Tyne and Wear Metro

Eligibility

There are no staff travel facilities on Tyne and Wear Metro for those holding Rail Staff Leisure Cards or RST Online Leisure Cards.

For Staff Travel Card holders the following arrangements are in place

For services between Sunderland to South Hylton

  • There are no free or concessionary facilities available to any Staff Travel Card or Status Pass holder.

For services between Heworth and Sunderland only (including all intermediate stations)

  • Gold Status Passes are valid for free travel 
  • Silver Status Passes are valid for free travel (even if the Silver Status Pass is endorsed “Not Valid on T&W Metro”)
  • Eastern Region Blue Status Passes are valid for free travel (even if the Eastern Region Blue Status Pass is endorsed “Not Valid on T&W Metro”)
  • Staff Travel Cards with any endorsement are valid, either using a dated box for free travel, or by purchasing a discounted ticket as detailed below.

For the rest of the Tyne and Wear network, excluding Sunderland to South Hylton

  • Gold Status Passes are valid for free travel 
  • Silver Status Passes are valid for free travel (unless the Silver Status Pass is endorsed “Not Valid on T&W Metro”)
  • Eastern Region Blue Status Passes are valid for free travel (unless the Eastern Region Blue Status Pass is endorsed “Not Valid on T&W Metro”)
  • Staff Travel Cards with endorsements NIL, 3 or 8 (for employees who entered employment before 11 August 1980) are valid, either using a dated box for free travel, or by purchasing a discounted ticket as detailed below.

Leaving and rejoining eligible employers

If you cease to be eligible for Tyne & Wear Metro facilities on leaving the service, you cannot have these reinstated if you re-enter employment with an Eligible Employer unless there is no gap between leaving the first Eligible Employer and joining the second.

Free travel

To obtain free travel, use your Status Pass or appropriately dated Staff Travel Card.

Discounted travel

To purchase a discounted ticket, only single Privilege rate tickets are available and to obtain these, you should press the child fare button on ticket issuing machines.

When travelling you must carry your Staff Travel Card or Status Pass to support the use of the staff discounted (priv rate) rate ticket.

Shields Ferry

There is no arrangement with Nexus for any staff travel on the Shields Ferry.
